It’s a reflective question and goes something like this: If you sit in a dark closet all alone and pray for a hot dog, will God bring you one? Now, unless you live under a rock, you know the obvious answer is no. Hopefully your prayers give you the willingness to get up and take your own action to go and get the hot dog. This concept applies to other things in our lives. I have sat for years praying for God to give me weight loss. Nothing happened until I supplied the willingness, effort, and action to make the weight go away. When my actions and efforts match what I am praying for, good things happen. Check your experience... "Draw water for the siege, strengthen your defenses! Work the clay, tread the mortar, and repair the brickwork! Nahum 3:14 Nahum’s words picture a city under threat — people hurriedly preparing, reinforcing walls, and arming themselves for what’s coming. That urgency teaches us two truths: first, danger or decline calls for practical action; second, God’s justice and timing are sure even when situations look bleak. We’re not called to fall into frantic fear, but to faithful readiness. Sometimes "drawing water" and "working the clay" are literal steps we take — seeking help, setting boundaries, making wise choices. Other times they are spiritual disciplines: prayer, repentance, seeking wise counsel, and putting on God’s protection by exercising faith. Preparation without trust can harden into anxiety; trust without preparation can become passivity. God honors both our responsible work and our dependence on Him. Remember also that Nahum points to God’s righteous response to injustice. If you feel overwhelmed by opposition or sin around you, God sees it and acts in His timing. Your role is to do what you can with the gifts and resources He’s given, to stand on His promises, and to keep your heart aligned with Him while He works. Identify one practical step you can take this week to strengthen your spiritual or relational "defenses" (prayer routine, accountability, reconciliation, professional help). Do that step trusting God to work beyond your capacity. Pray for God’s timing and justice and cultivate peace as you wait. Prayer Jesus, I come to You asking for wisdom and strength. Help me to do the practical work before me — to prepare, to set healthy boundaries, and to seek wise help — while trusting You to fight what I cannot. Guard my heart from fear and pride. Give me patience for Your timing and confidence in Your justice and mercy. Fill me with Your peace as I take the steps You lead me to take. In Your name I pray, Amen. . .
