Yesterday I went to the parade. Today I’m enjoying a day off from work for the holiday. But there’s a huge contradiction sitting right in the middle of those two sentences. For much of the country, today is still Columbus Day. Here in San Francisco, and officially for my employer, today is Indigenous Peoples Day. Same day. Very different stories. I actually think there’s something important about sitting with that tension instead of pretending it isn’t there. The celebrations surrounding Columbus Day became deeply connected to Italian American pride and to generations of immigrants who wanted their heritage recognized and respected. That history matters. And I enjoyed the Italian Heritage celebration and parade yesterday for Columbus Day. But the history of Christopher Columbus and what followed his arrival in the Americas is also filled with violence, exploitation, displacement, and enormous suffering for Indigenous people. That history matters too. I don’t think acknowledging one requires us to erase the other. I can enjoy a parade, celebrate culture, music, food, community and tradition, while also recognizing that some of the stories we were taught growing up were incomplete. History is complicated because people are complicated. Maturity, individually and as a country, is being willing to look at the whole story instead of choosing only the parts that make us feel comfortable. This holiday weekend is about both celebration and remembrance. I’m grateful for the cultures that have helped shape this incredible city I call home, and today I’m especially honoring the Indigenous people who were here long before any of us arrived. There’s room for pride and for truth. And hopefully, there’s always room for us to keep learning. Happy Indigenous Peoples Day Beautiful People. ❤️ Sending love & hugs 🤗💕 #BalconyChronicles
