Though not #Sikh, #AmrishPuri came from a theatre-trained generation that treated religious identity as integral, not cosmetic. When portraying Sikh or Punjabi characters, he was known for unusual care and restraint. He viewed the turban and beard as symbols of dignity, insisting on neat, context-appropriate styling and avoiding exaggerated or comic caricatures common in 1970s–80s Bollywood. During a time when Sikh characters were often reduced to loud stereotypes or slapstick humor, he quietly resisted degrading portrayals especially in roles meant to convey authority. His IPTA theatre background emphasized research, body language, and respect, which is why even his villainous characters rarely mocked religion directly. While he readily played flawed or negative roles, he drew a clear line between portraying a bad character and humiliating a faith. Amrish Puri never made public statements about this stance. His influence was subtle expressed through professionalism, performance choices, and on-set conduct rather than activism
