Marco Gallo, a 17-year-old Italian teenager who loved sports, the mountains, and everyone he met, is now on the path to sainthood. On March 7, 2026, what would have been his 32nd birthday, Archbishop Mario Delpini of Milan opened his cause for beatification. Born in Chiavari in 1994 and raised in a devout family belonging to the Communion and Liberation movement, Marco lived an ordinary yet deeply intentional Catholic life. He read the Bible daily, received the sacraments frequently, and was always ready to help those in need, especially the lonely. At school, he became a natural leader, organizing volunteer projects and tutoring classmates. One friend recalled that in Marco’s presence, “it was as if you were the only person in the world.” The night before his sudden death in a car accident on November 5, 2011, Marco wrote on the wall of his room beside a San Damiano cross: “Why do you seek among the dead the one who is alive?” In his wallet that day were a small image of Our Lady of Medjugorje, a childhood photo, a few euros, and a handwritten promise to seek the Mystery of God with all his strength, as if it were the last day of his life. His mother later said the words on the wall became a source of consolation, helping the family understand that death is not the end.
