The Dual Taijitu symbol, commonly known as the Yinyang symbol is a centuries-old diagram, expressing the core idea of ancient Chinese philosophy and cosmology: Opposite forces are complementary to each other, rather than being separate entities. The terms originally represented two sides of a hill, the sunny and shady sides. Yin, the dark side, is associated with passivity, the moon, reception, stillness and traditionally with femininity; while Yang, the light side, is associated with activity, expansion, the sun, fire, and masculinity. Nevertheless, the symbol is often oversimplified, especially in the Western world, where it is commonly misrepresented as ‘the good’ and ‘the bad’. They are two aspects of one whole, interdependent and intersected. One needs the other to exist, and each contains a seed of the other, just like the sunny and shady sides of same hill change places as the sun moves. “Misery! Happiness is to be found by its side. Happiness! Misery lurks beneath it“ (Tao Te Ching, ch. 58, trans. James Legge, 1891) #moodboard #yingyang #symbolism #ancientchina #motiondesign
