@krisd.ai: If I had to start over as an AI engineer, here’s exactly what I would do 1. Pick your path. “AI engineer” is a broad title. Some engineers train models or fine-tune them for specific tasks. Others use those models to build apps and agents that take action. Pick the kind of work you want to do before choosing what to learn. 2. Understand AI harnesses. The model is only one part of an agent. The harness is the system around it. It connects tools, manages the information the model sees, and keeps the task looping. Learn how an agent goes from a request to a finished task. 3. Understand evals. Evals are tests that show if your AI does its job. Before you give it real tasks, decide what a good result looks like, and see how far off it is. Run those types of tests whenever you change the model or app. 4. Explore different formats. Go beyond text. Try voice, images, or video. A voice assistant has to handle pauses and interruptions. A video tool has to understand what happens over time. Pick one and build a small project. 5. Learn AI infrastructure. Learn what it takes to run your app for real users. How does it connect to a model? Where does it store data? What happens when a request fails? Learn to track speed, cost, and errors as more people use it.
