the difference is that a long ongoing series especially for a mangaka of toriyamas caliber who has plenty of major project, without any wiki or the like, something oda also has said is how the wiki is major help for him to remember stuff. they have alot on their mind and have to come up with new stuff and view from every perspective, while larpers cant just sit and watch a series

What's really at stake is actually quite big. The loss of the identity of a subculture is what's at stake, and while it seems to not be a big deal to you because of the context being Dragonball, I encourage you to look into larpers in the hardcore, goth, and metal scenes and listen to the people within those communities who spell out how that's an issue.

the larping term is stupid, Larping is Live, action, role, play, the term they are looking for is poser, and just because you don't know everything about a series, movie or video game doesn't mean you don't like the series. I've watched hundreds of shows I'm not going to remember everything from them
