@black44robin: Ra Tchuarima (Fifth Day) o ta wiki o ta rē Moriori Today we interview Kate Preece, a local children’s author actively working in the space about getting ta rē Moriori into the hands of our youngest Tchimirik. Kate’s tupukapuka all focus on the critters and creatures that call Rēkohu home, so our tchimirik’ are growing up with books about their own place rather than somewhere else, not to mention all tchimirik on the mainland and beyond getting a window in. But Ten Nosey Weka is extra special. A finalist in the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, the counting book is the first to feature ta rē Moriori, alongside te reo Māori and English. Tchimirik learning to count in a language that was nearly taken completely, very special. The good news is there’s more to come. Out in April, trilingual Where is Wiri Weka? features more than 50 tukupu in a tale that’s a bit of a wild weka chase. Kate says her biggest challenge this year was writing a book for Hokotehi Moriori Trust that is not only completely in ta rē Moriori, but could also be a lullaby. The result is Ewhi? Tau Tehi. Have a listen on Spotify now under Hokotehi Moriori Trust. Getting the language to our tchimirik’ early is how it survives. This is that work. Learn about all of Kate’s tupukapuka at katepreece.co.nz, or find them at all good book stores, right alongside Hairy Maclary.
