@katerynashistory: Meet Miroslava of Bulgaria and Ashot Taronites, a couple whose romance unfolded amid the fierce political rivalries of the late 10th century. Miroslava was the daughter of Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria. Ashot, a Byzantine nobleman of Armenian origin, was captured by the Bulgarians. According to the Byzantine chronicler John Skylitzes, Miroslava fell in love with her father’s prisoner and threatened to take her own life if she could not marry him. Her father eventually agreed, and the two married around 996. Samuel appointed Ashot governor of Dyrrhachium (modern-day Durrës, Albania). Yet Ashot and Miroslava eventually fled to Constantinople, helping arrange the city’s return to Byzantine control. #MiroslavaOfBulgaria #AshotTaronites #BulgarianHistory #MedievalHistory #WomenInHistory
