A Little Boy’s Tomb With a Window… A Father’s Promise That Has Lasted Over 160 Years. 🕊️ Today, while visiting the beautiful Beardsley Cemetery in Oxford, New York, we came upon a resting place that touched my heart in a way I cannot explain. This is the story of little Merrit Beardsley. In December of 1865, Merrit was just eight years old when he passed away after suffering from a fever. According to the story passed down through generations, little Merrit was terribly afraid of the dark. As his life was coming to an end, he asked his father not to bury him in a dark grave. His father, William Beardsley, was a stonemason. Heartbroken over losing his little boy, he made him a promise. He would build his son a tomb with a window, so the sunlight could always shine in. And he kept that promise. More than 160 years later, that little window remains a symbol of a father’s love for his child. As we approached Merrit’s tomb, I noticed something that completely broke my heart. Toys. Little cars, a yellow school bus, and a beautiful old wooden truck. All left by visitors who had come before us. People who never knew this little boy, yet felt enough love and compassion to leave him something. I stood there looking at those toys, thinking about a little eight-year-old boy who was afraid of the dark and a father who wanted nothing more than to comfort his son. And I cried. I truly did. All I could say was, “God bless you, little Merrit.” The cemetery itself is one of the most beautiful and peaceful we have ever visited. Surrounded by magnificent old trees, historic stones, and the quiet beauty of nature, it feels like a place where time stands still. A special thank you to those who have worked so hard to restore and preserve Merrit’s resting place, especially Stefan Foster, whose dedication has helped keep this little boy’s story alive. We travel the backroads searching for history, forgotten places, and the stories of those who came before us. But sometimes, we find something that reaches much deeper than history. Today, we found a father’s promise, a little boy’s memory, and a reminder that love never truly disappears. Rest peacefully, sweet Merrit. May the light always shine through your window. — The Backroad Soul Searchers #cemetery #History #old
