If you have a “heaty” constitution, you may not want to eat too much ginger. In Chinese medicine, foods have energetic properties—and ginger is considered warming. It can be wonderful if you tend to run cold, but if you already have too much heat, constantly adding more warming foods can aggravate that imbalance. This is also why traditionally in China, ginger tea is generally considered more appropriate earlier in the day rather than at night. Because ginger is warming and stimulating in TCM, the belief is that having too much in the evening may interfere with the body’s ability to settle into rest. Other things that can create or exacerbate heat include alcohol, spicy foods, and too much red meat. So how do you know if you have a heatier constitution? You may tend to: • Feel hot easily or dislike hot weather • Have a red face or flush easily • Get acne, rashes or other red/inflamed skin issues (eczema, dermatitis…) • Feel thirsty and prefer cold drinks • Have a dry mouth or bad breath • Be prone to irritability or feeling easily agitated • Have darker yellow urine or constipation • Have a red tongue, sometimes with a yellow coating Chinese medicine is all about balance. Ginger isn’t “bad”—but something that benefits one person may not be what another person needs.
