Yamamoto Tsunetomo was a samurai who never fought a single battle in his life. He served his lord faithfully for thirty years during Japan’s longest period of peace, and when his lord died in 1700, he retreated to a hermitage in the mountains rather than follow him in death. It was there, in solitude, that he dictated the Hagakure. One of the most profound texts on the warrior spirit ever written. A man who never drew his sword in war left behind the most enduring philosophy of what a warrior actually is. Tsunetomo wrote in the Hagakure that the way of the samurai is found in death. Meaning that a warrior must resolve every internal conflict before the battle begins, so that nothing remains to distract him when the moment arrives. The preparation of the mind was not secondary to the preparation of the sword. It was primary. A man who had not conquered himself could not be trusted to face anything else. The outer enemy was simply a reflection of the war he had not yet finished inside. Tsunetomo never raised a sword against another man. He spent his life fighting the only battle that ever truly mattered. #lifequotes #philosophy #strategy #stoicism #wisdom
