Lindsay Clancy’s mother’s testimony today actually made me have more questions, not fewer. Her mother testified about watching Lindsay decline. The anxiety. The insomnia. The fear. Lindsay telling her she was sick, that she didn’t want to be alone, that she was scared. She even testified that Lindsay told her and Patrick that she was having thoughts of harming the children. And THAT is where I have a problem. Because why didn’t Lindsay tell one of her MANY doctors THAT? Not just, “I’m having thoughts.” Not vague statements. Not writing things privately in a journal. Why didn’t she sit across from one of the numerous medical professionals treating her and say: “I am scared I might hurt my children.” That is a VERY different statement, and it gives a doctor information they need to actually assess the danger. Doctor after doctor who testified for the prosecution said Lindsay did not tell them she wanted to harm her children. They can only treat the symptoms you actually disclose to them. They cannot climb inside your head. They cannot read your journal sitting at home. They cannot act on information you choose not to give them. So when people keep asking, “Why didn’t anyone help Lindsay?” At some point we have to ask: what exactly were they supposed to do with information Lindsay wasn’t giving them? Her own mother’s testimony tells us Lindsay was capable of verbalizing that fear. She could tell her family she was having thoughts of harming her children. So why was that crucial piece of information apparently not being communicated to the people whose JOB it was to evaluate and treat her? And then there’s the hospital. If Lindsay was truly THAT scared of herself, if she genuinely believed she was becoming dangerous, why not stay? She had an opportunity to remain hospitalized. Instead, she wanted to leave and attend a birthday gathering. I’m sorry, but missing one birthday would have been okay. Missing Christmas would have been okay. Missing birthdays, holidays, dinners, photographs, ALL OF IT would have been okay if staying in that hospital meant Cora, Dawson and Callan were still alive today. Say it fucking plainly: “I am scared I am going to hurt my children. I do not feel safe going home. Do not let me leave.” Maybe that changes everything. Maybe it doesn’t. We will never know. But I am tired of hearing that Lindsay had absolutely no help when this trial has shown doctor after doctor, appointment after appointment, resources, hospitalizations and family members trying to help her. Mental illness can explain why someone is struggling. It can affect judgment. It can make communication incredibly difficult. I understand that. But doctors cannot respond to information they were never given. So who carries responsibility for Lindsay withholding one of the MOST IMPORTANT pieces of information from the people treating her?
