Hijab Ban and Arrests in Azerbaijan – A Crisis for Religious Freedom and the Right to EducationDear International Media, Journalists, and Human Rights Organizations,I am writing to you on behalf of the Muslim community in Azerbaijan to bring urgent attention to a severe human rights and religious freedom crisis unfolding in our country. Recently, the Azerbaijani government introduced new school uniform regulations under the justification of maintaining "secularism" in education. In practice, these rules effectively ban the hijab in all public schools. As a direct result, female students and teachers who wear the hijab are being denied entry into their schools. Young girls are being turned away at the school gates, causing immense emotional distress and threatening their fundamental right to education. We are being forced to choose between our faith and our education.Furthermore, the government's response to this issue has been highly oppressive. Authorities are not only denying education to Muslim girls but are also conducting a severe crackdown on those who speak out. Dozens of people—including parents, students, and religious activists—have been arrested and detained for peacefully protesting these unjust policies and defending the rights of Muslim women. The government claims that this is not religious discrimination and that the hijab is allowed outside of school premises. However, the reality on the ground is a systematic violation of our religious freedoms. Banning the hijab in educational institutions is a direct attack on the religious identity of Muslim women and a barrier to their basic right to learn.We urgently appeal to the international media, global human rights organizations, and the international community to shed light on this injustice. Please report on the plight of Muslim students, teachers, and families in Azerbaijan. Your voice and global attention can help protect our rights, ensure our girls can return to their classrooms without fear, and hold the authorities accountable.We are ready to provide further information, testimonies, and evidence if needed.
