@hobywon_on_hollywood: On Review... Street Fighter (2026) Street Fighter hits the big screen as a loud, vibrant, maximalist love letter to the franchise that proudly embraces its arcade roots. When the fighting starts, the film thrives as pure, high-octane escapism. The visual, complex fight choreography tastefully integrates iconic special moves, while a massive roster of fan-favorite characters, FGC nods, and car-smashing bonus stage references keep the energy high. Its best creative choice comes in stunning 2D anime flashback sequences that pay homage to the 1994 animated movie, backed by a scene-stealing cast—Andrew Koji delivers incredible physical action, while Cody Rhodes (Guile) and David Dastmalchian bring fantastic, campy energy to match the nostalgic '90s vibe and soundtrack. When the dust settles, however, the film completely falls apart under the weight of its script. The screenplay is a messy, overstuffed disaster that juggles four storylines simultaneously with zero structural flow. The dialogue is rough and predictable, with characters flatly spelling out their exact motivations like an unpolished placeholder draft. Worse, the central tournament feels like a complete bait-and-switch—showing only two full on-screen fights before skipping the rest—and the narrative peters out into an abrupt, sequel-bait ending rather than delivering a satisfying resolution. Add in retrograde '90s humor and unnecessary, leering camera angles, and you get a film that is deeply flawed on a narrative level. Yet, as a visually stunning crowd-pleaser and "stupid fun" popcorn flick, fighting game fans will find plenty of action to appreciate.
