The concept of "dark stars" with gravity so immense that even light could not escape was first proposed by John Michell in 1783 and Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1796, using Newtonian physics. However, this early hypothesis was largely forgotten for over a century because the prevailing understanding of light at the time could not support such a phenomenon. The modern mathematical foundation was laid in 1915 by Albert Einstein through his general theory of relativity, which explained gravity as the warping of spacetime. Just a few months later, in 1916, German physicist Karl Schwarzschild solved Einstein's complex equations and calculated the exact critical radius at which any collapsing mass collapses into an inescapable point. In 1939, Robert Oppenheimer proved that these objects could actually form in nature when massive stars run out of fuel and collapse under their own weight. The catchy term "black hole" was later popularized in 1967 by American physicist John Wheeler, and in 1974, Stephen Hawking revolutionized the theory by proving that black holes can slowly evaporate over time. #blackhole #scientists #scary #Science
