NEW TREND?! Dc:Me !

Early Settlement (Before the 10th Century) Mombasa was first settled by Bantu-speaking communities. Later, Arab and Persian traders arrived and mixed with the local population, helping to form the Swahili culture. Mombasa became an important trading port dealing in ivory, gold, spices, and other goods. Shirazi Period (10th–15th Century) Tradition says Persian (Shirazi) families settled in Mombasa. Local Swahili rulers governed the city. Islam became widely established, and many mosques were built. Portuguese Rule ( 1505–1698) In 1498, Vasco da Gama visited Mombasa. In 1505, the Portuguese captured the city. They built Fort Jesus in 1593 to protect their interests. Portuguese captains governed Mombasa on behalf of Portugal. Omani Rule (1698–1837) In 1698, the Sultanate of Oman defeated the Portuguese and took control. Mombasa was ruled by Omani governors (Liwalis). Trade expanded, including the unfortunate slave trade. Mazrui Dynasty (1741–1837) The Mazrui family, of Omani origin, became powerful rulers of Mombasa. They often resisted the authority of the Sultan of Oman. Some important Mazrui rulers include: Ali bin عثمان (Ali bin Uthman) Abdallah bin Ahmed al-Mazrui Salim bin Ahmed al-Mazrui Sultan of Zanzibar (1837–1895) Sultan Said bin Sultan of Oman brought Mombasa firmly under his control. After moving his capital to Zanzibar, Mombasa became part of the Sultanate of Zanzibar. Liwalis continued to administer the city. British Protectorate (1895–1963) Britain took control of the Kenya Protectorate in 1895. Mombasa served as Kenya's first capital until 1907. British colonial administrators governed the town. The Uganda Railway began from Mombasa, making it East Africa's main port. Independent Kenya (1963–Present) Since Kenya gained independence on 12 December 1963, Mombasa has been part of the Republic of Kenya. Mayors of Mombasa (selected) Ronald Ngala (first African Mayor, 1955) Shariff Nassir (the father of current governor) Ahmed Mohdhar Taib Ali Taib Other elected mayors served until 2013. Governors of Mombasa County (2013–Present) After the 2010 Constitution introduced county governments: Hassan Ali Joho (2013–2022) First Governor of Mombasa County. Served two terms. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (2022–Present) Current Governor of Mombasa County. Important Historical Leaders Connected to Mombasa Vasco da Gama – Portuguese explorer who visited Mombasa in 1498. Shariff Nassir – Influential Mombasa politician. Hassan Ali Joho – First Governor of Mombasa County. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir – Current Governor. Today, Mombasa remains Kenya's oldest city and its largest seaport, with a history spanning over 1,000 years as a center of trade, culture, and the Swahili civilization. thank you
