Steve Gadd — There are drummers who play on legendary recordings… and then there’s Steve Gadd, whose playing has practically become part of the vocabulary of modern drumming. Seriously, where do you even BEGIN with this man?! Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” Steely Dan’s “Aja.” Chick Corea’s “Night Sprite.” Three completely different musical settings, three unforgettable drum performances, and one unmistakable musician behind the kit. And that’s what I find so fascinating about Steve. His playing can be incredibly sophisticated, but it never feels like he’s trying to impress you with how much he knows. Every ghost note, accent, fill, and little rhythmic variation seems to have a PURPOSE. Take “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” That groove has a military-style, rudimental quality to it, yet somehow Steve transformed it into one of the most recognizable drum parts in popular music. And then there’s “Aja.” GOOD LORD. 😂 That performance is practically a masterclass in how to build intensity, navigate complex music, and unleash some truly extraordinary playing without losing the thread of the song. But here’s the thing I admire most. Steve can make a deceptively simple groove feel absolutely incredible. His time, touch, dynamics, and placement of notes are so beautifully balanced that the drums seem to breathe with the music. He reminds us that what you DON’T play can be just as important as what you do. And for all of us who spend hours working on rudiments, independence, speed, and coordination, Steve is a wonderful reminder of what all that work is ultimately FOR. Making music. What’s YOUR favorite Steve Gadd recording? #drums #drummer #drumsolo #stevegadd #jazzfusion
