Metis HISTORY -COOKING WITH BRIGHT EYES Celebrating Women’s History Month: Annie McDermot Bannatyne (c. 1830–1908). During Women’s History Month, we honor Annie McDermot Bannatyne, a foundational Red River Métis civic figure, business leader, and philanthropist whose fiercely independent spirit left an indelible mark on Western Canadian history. 📜 The Life and Legacy of a Métis Trailblazer. A Prominent Upbringing: Born around 1830 at Fort Garry (modern-day Winnipeg), Annie was the daughter of Andrew McDermot, a wealthy Irish trader, and Sarah McNab, who was of Saulteaux and European descent. Highly educated and deeply culturally aware, she married influential merchant and politician Andrew Graham Ballenden Bannatyne in 1851. The Architecture of Care: Annie was far from just a prominent merchant's wife; she was a major civic leader in her own right. Using her considerable influence, she established the local Ladies’ Association. Through her relentless passion, drive, and community fundraising efforts, she successfully mobilized the resources required to construct the Winnipeg General Hospital (known today as the Health Sciences Centre). Standing Ground Against Injustice: In February 1869, an expansionist Toronto writer named Charles Mair published letters in eastern newspapers filled with deeply disparaging and racist remarks about Red River's mixed-blood women and local society. Refusing to let her community be demeaned, Annie waited until Mair came to her husband's post-office store to collect his mail—where she publicly horsewhipped him. This legendary act of resistance sent a shockwave through the colony, proving that Métis women would not be silenced, and directly inspired Louis Riel's early public defenses during the Red River Resistance.
