@jos.pham.nguyen.sdb: St. Clare of Montefalco (Chiara della Croce, 1268–1308) was an Augustinian abbess in Umbria who lived hidden, prayed constantly, and spoke of one mystery again and again: “I already have Christ crucified in my heart.” Her sisters thought it was only a beautiful way of speaking. After she died on 17 August 1308, they opened her heart to preserve it. What they found astonished them: formed in the very flesh of her heart was a small crucifix — about the size of a thumb — together with other signs of the Passion: a scourge, nails, a crown of thorns. In her gallbladder they found three small stones arranged like a triangle, which they received as a sign of the Holy Trinity. Clare had once told them that Christ appeared to her as a pilgrim carrying His Cross and said He had searched the world for a place to plant it. He chose her heart. The pain never left her. After her death, the Church examined the signs. A commission of physicians, jurists, and theologians ruled out fabrication. Pope Leo XIII canonized her on 8 December 1881. Her incorrupt body and the relics of her heart are still venerated at the Sanctuary of Santa Chiara della Croce in Montefalco. The Cross was not only something she contemplated.
