In the trial of Visalia mother Maya Hernandez, prosecutors and the defense presented sharply contrasting closing arguments over the death of her one-year-old son, Amilio, after she left him and his two-year-old brother, Mateo, in a hot car while attending a cosmetic procedure in June. The prosecution argued Hernandez deliberately left her children in the car for hours, prioritizing her spa visit over their safety. They argued she knew the risks, ignored them, and caused Amilio’s death, meeting the standard for second-degree murder. The defense argued Hernandez was negligent but did not act with the intent or “implied malice” required for murder. They argued she mistakenly believed the car’s air conditioning would stay on and accepted responsibility for child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter, but denied murder. After two days of deliberations, the jury convicted Hernandez of one count of child abuse but deadlocked on second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Sentencing for the child abuse charge is set for January 12, 2026, and prosecutors have not announced whether they will retry her on the other charges. #truecrime #patheticparents
