@silvcassini: Where the name Uganda comes from? 🇺🇬 The answer lies in the powerful Kingdom of Buganda, which existed long before modern Uganda was created. But how did Buganda become Uganda? It's a fascinating story of language, kingdoms and colonial history, and a reminder that the names of African countries often have much deeper roots than we realise! #Uganda #Buganda #AfricanCulture #EastAfricanHistory #DidYouKnow
Hmmm In the opinion of Uganda, we have many Bantu languages and kingdoms of which omuganda or ganda means bundle, (many together) U for Unity hence the name Uganda.

SK :
In Bantu languages/Swahili, the prefix "U-" or "Bu" means "The Land of"
That's why:
Uganda = U + Ganda = The land of the Baganda people
Just like:
"Uingereza" = U + Ingereza (English) = The land of the English people / England.
Same logic as Usukumani = Land of Sukuma, Ujerumani = Land of Germany, Urundi= Land of Rundi people (Burundi)

Point of correction. By the time of trade by the Arabs, none of the East African states existed. Instead we had Kingdoms which functioned under a federal system. The Kings or Chiefs led their subjects. The subjects paid taxes and each Kingdom has an administrative structure with the finance department playing a crucial role of using the raised taxes to provide services like hospitals. When the Brits first visited Buganda Kingdom, they were amazed by what they saw. A full functioning govt structure which they had never witnessed anywhere else. Rumour has it the Brits copied the Buganda Kingdom structure to which the current United Kingdom now uses. It’s during the independence negotiations that Kingdoms came together and agreed to form one unit and as Buganda Kingdom was the largest and had the best model, a name Uganda was derived. Without Buganda Kingdom, there would be no Uganda. What affects this Kingdom till todate affects the rest of Uganda.
