The Aesir & Jotunar are kinda like the Olympians and Titans, two groups of deities organized by mythological history and allegiance.

Almost everything in God of War is accurate tho, except for Kratos of course. Best way to learn Norse mythology while playing is to just listen to what Mimir is telling you.

OH MY GOD FINALLY. Bro people genuinely need to know this because there are like 3-4 realms that are solidly their own place and then there’s like 30 that maybe are realms, for example alfhem which is usually a shoe in for one of the realms is sometimes called part of Asgård and not to mention helhem sometimes being nifelhem and also hel having control over nine realms but seemingly doesn’t have control over everything. An interpretation that I like is that nine was just used in place a lot for example there is a god who’s said to have 9 daughters each for different aspects of the sea but it’s up for debate how many he actually has especially when multiple of them are the same thing

I wouldn't exactly call them all family groups. The Æsir and Vanir certainly are but the Jötunn is a species, the Æsir and Vanir are just families of Jötunn of course there is some gray areas in that as well, but considering the fact that Loki and some others are both “Gods” and “Giants” the Jötnar do seem to be the standard and the gods are just important families.

yep, saying nine realms was basically the equivalent of saying "a bunch" or "dozens" . modern fantasy writers took the ones they liked, made up some others, and added their own creative differences. some of these realms are more like the suburbs to each other. the jotun thing is similar to the Titans, not really giants most of the time to other gods.

the whole thing with nine realms may have came from there being large cities/regions where the species lived and ruled
