Add conformity to the list, easily one of the worst places for self-expression. People will be mean as hell because someone is wearing something colorful, being fun, or displaying whimsy, at least that’s what I noticed. It was like people resented any break from the norm and made it their business to personally stamp it out, even with kids!

My mom’s (silent gen) side of the family is all Dutch and she’s 2nd generation US. I grew up far away from my parent’s families and by the time I was about 10yo, Mom had already thoroughly instilled in me the understanding that her people (and anyone who was Dutch Reform) were racists and bigots and that I should strive to be as unlike them as possible.
