@mothershipsg: An investigation by environmental group Greenpeace has linked 2 Singapore-listed palm oil companies, Bumitama Agri and First Resources, to plantation areas in Indonesia where fires and smoke were detected. A 3rd company, privately held First Borneo Plantations, was also named in the report and found to have ownership links to companies incorporated in Singapore. According to Greenpeace, fires and smoke were detected between August and September on land that the 3 companies had been granted rights to use or develop, known as plantation concessions, which they are responsible for managing under their respective agreements. In a statement, First Resources said that detecting fires or hot spots within or near a company's plantation does not " by itself, establish the origin of a fire, responsibility for its occurrence, or any deliberate use of fire for land clearing by the concession holder". Such determinations require detailed ground verification and a thorough assessment of the circumstances surrounding each fire event, it added.
