Some places seem to hold everything we love about an old fashioned New England autumn in one little scene. Up in northwestern Vermont, Swanton has a history that is reaches far beyond its quiet country scenery. This is Abenaki homeland, with roots long predating the town’s charter on August 17, 1763, issued by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth. The Missisquoi River helped shape the community, carrying timber toward Lake Champlain before the railroads brought another chapter of trade and travel. And here’s an unexpected bit of local history, in 1961, Swanton received a pair of swans from England with Queen Elizabeth II’s blessing. A summer resident helped arrange their arrival in anticipation of the town’s 1963 bicentennial, a royal connection for a little Vermont town!
