@thetimes: Are addicts spending benefits on drink and drugs? Support workers and doctors have told The Times Welfare Inquiry that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) often pays addicts large back payments when they are approved for personal independence payments (Pip), and that this leads them to relapse. Pip, which typically accompanies other disability benefits, is a non-means tested benefit worth up to £194 a week that is intended to support the added cost of living with disability. Almost 18,000 people are claiming Pip with substance or alcohol abuse as their main disabling condition, meaning it is the most debilitating of potentially a number of health issues. Addicts are typically given Pip for an associated mental health condition such as anxiety or depression, experts say. Last year, the government spent an estimated £128m on Pip payments for people it categorised as having “substance misuse problems”. *for news purposes* #benefits #money #finance #investigation #uknews

An addict will get money one way or another, even if it does go towards addiction there’d be so much more crime if that money was taken away realistically

yeah this fails to take into account Maslow's hierarchy of needs and expects you to believe that going on a course is going to stop alcoholism or any form of addiction and it just doesn't. I'm surprised a paper such as the times didn't have the resources to actually investigate this with common sense and basic understanding at the heart of it rather than demonization of a vulnerable group within society

You take away the cash benefits guess what happens to the crime rates… taking away the means doesn’t take away the addiction

It’s funny how the first thing recovery services tell family members is don’t enable, never fund the habit, but when it’s suggested this apply to benefits people have a problem

Would stopping PIP reduce the number of addicts? Probably not. There’s your answer.
