On one hand, we have Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson launching attendance campaigns and telling the media that: “Attendance is about more than grades, though. Every absence is not just a day of learning lost, it is a day of childhood missed”. The narrative pushed from the top is RELENTLESS… every single day in the classroom is a sacred piece of their childhood that can never be replaced 🤣 Yet, on the other hand, a school is perfectly happy to pull a child out of the classroom, separate them from their peers, and stick them in an isolation booth for the entire day because a laundry mishap meant he wore white socks instead of black ones. Make👏🏽 it 👏🏽make👏🏽sense 👏🏽 You cannot relentlessly argue that school is the absolute centre of a child’s childhood and development, and then actively gatekeep and weaponise their access to it over a minor dress code violation. My brother in law quite rightly called it out to them: “You’re going to make him miss a whole day of learning because of his socks?” Yes. Because when the chips are down, the system doesn’t actually prioritise education or “childhood”… it prioritises blind compliance. Situations like this make me incredibly grateful to be outside of that rigid framework. If the uniform system and strict rules work for your family, that’s fine. But don’t look at home educated families and question our structure or socialisation when the alternative involves putting a child in isolation over the colour of their socks 💀 School parents and home ed parents…. surely we can ALL agree that this is absolute madness?!?!
