“YOU EARN MORE THAN ME. WHY SHOULD I PROVIDE FOR YOU?” Because your wife’s salary does not automatically transfer your responsibility onto her. Islam recognises Istiqlāl al-Dhimmah al-Māliyyah (استقلال الذمة المالية), meaning financial independence. Marriage does not merge her money with yours. (Dar al-Ifta, Fatwa 9031) EVEN IF SHE EARNS TEN TIMES MORE Her higher income alone does not oblige her to pay rent, groceries or household bills. Your duty of reasonable maintenance remains according to your means. She may contribute willingly. Her generosity should never become a payment you demand. (International Islamic Fiqh Academy, Resolution 144 (2/16), sections II–IV) SHE CAN KEEP HER FINANCES PRIVATE She is not obliged to disclose how much money she owns. Keeping her own wealth private is not itself betrayal or disobedience. This does not permit lying or evading genuine obligations. (Islamweb, Fatwa 396184) SHE CONTROLS HER OWN MONEY She does not need your permission to spend her own money lawfully, save or help her parents. Her personal debts, zakat and valid financial commitments remain her responsibility. (Fiqh Academy, Resolution 144; Islamweb, Fatwa 128688) IF YOU TAKE HER MONEY UNJUSTLY The Prophet ﷺ warned that unresolved oppression can be repaid through the wrongdoer’s good deeds on Judgment Day. If those are exhausted, the victim’s sins may be placed upon him. This is a general warning against injustice. Being her husband does not exempt you. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2449) LEGALLY: Section 2(viii)(d) of the Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act, 1939 recognises disposing of her property or preventing her from exercising her legal rights over it as cruelty giving grounds for judicial dissolution. If she helps build your home, appreciate her. Do not turn her kindness into your entitlement.
