The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) — Full Story Spoiler Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist, is hired by wealthy Henrik Vanger to investigate the disappearance of his niece, Harriet, who vanished 40 years ago. Mikael teams up with Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant hacker with a traumatic past. They discover that Henrik's brother, Gottfried Vanger, was a serial killer who sexually abused his children, Harriet and Martin. Martin eventually became a serial killer himself. Big twist: Harriet was never murdered! She actually killed her abusive father, Gottfried, and later escaped to Australia to get away from Martin, who was also abusing her. Martin captures Mikael and nearly kills him, but Lisbeth saves him. Martin escapes in a car and dies in a crash. Mikael finds Harriet in Australia and brings her home, where she finally reunites with Henrik after 40 years. Lisbeth then helps Mikael expose a corrupt businessman and secretly steals millions from him. The sad ending: Lisbeth falls in love with Mikael and buys him a Christmas gift. But when she sees him with another woman, Erika, she throws the gift away and rides off heartbroken. Basically: The missing girl was alive, her father and brother were serial killers, and the hacker who saved everyone ended up heartbroken.

I hate the American versions of these stories. They make Lisbeth all heartbroken over Mikeal but in the original story she couldn't give af about him.
