Also sometimes it comes down to not having anything in common or perceiving/assuming you have nothing in common with someone and nobody approaches you. I remember at my college orientation day in the US a girl was sitting all alone and she looked like the Girl with the dragon tattoo. But because I had come from London and was highly familiar with the punk rock movement and all the bands I just walked up and sat next to her and asked her if she liked Siouxsie and the Banshees and her face completely lit up and we were talking for ages and she was an amazing person.
