Part of downtown San Francisco is built on top of ships. Dozens of vessels abandoned by crews who ran for the goldfields in 1849 were buried under landfill, and construction crews still hit their hulls when they dig foundations today. This is the American history everyone learned in one sentence at school, and the sentence is wrong. The gold rush made almost nobody rich who actually dug. The man whose land the gold was found on died broke, petitioning Congress. The carpenter who found it died with barely enough for a funeral. The first millionaire it produced never went near a river: he bought every shovel and pan in the region before he told anyone, then walked through town waving a bottle of gold dust. California history in three years: a village of two hundred becoming a city of thirty six thousand, eggs at a dollar apiece, a state with no territory phase, and a sentence about the people who were already there that the state itself now uses. Stay to the end for the rule every boom since has borrowed from 1848. #goldrush #californiahistory #americanhistory #History #historytok
✨ NEW & FREE IN KANSAS CITY! ✨ This spectacular light show at the National WWI Museum and Memorial is only here for a limited time, and you won’t want to miss it! #partnership Kansas City’s iconic Liberty Memorial is transformed into a breathtaking display of light, color, music and motion during Liberty’s Beacon, a FREE outdoor projection mapping experience celebrating the museum’s 100th anniversary! Here’s everything you need to know before you go! 📍 WHERE: National WWI Museum and Memorial 2 Memorial Drive, Kansas City, MO 📅 WHEN: Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings through November 8, with special additional showings November 9–11 in celebration of Veterans Day! ⏰ SHOWTIMES: 7:30–10:30 p.m. Each show lasts approximately 10 minutes and repeats every 15 minutes. 🎟️ COST: Completely FREE! No tickets or reservations required! 🎨 DIFFERENT ARTISTS EACH WEEKEND! Three internationally acclaimed artists have created their own unique light and sound experiences, so you can visit more than once and see something completely different! 🚗 PARKING: We arrived around 6:45 p.m. and found plenty of parking in the U-shaped drive directly in front of the museum. There’s also an overflow lot on the museum grounds and additional street parking along Kessler Road, west of the museum. ♿ IMPORTANT ACCESSIBILITY TIP: If you’re visiting with grandparents, young children or anyone with mobility challenges, I recommend taking the path on the WEST side of the museum to reach the North Lawn. It is much easier to navigate! The east side has quite a few stairs. 🧺 WHAT TO BRING: Lawn chairs or picnic blankets! There’s tons of room to spread out on the North Lawn, directly across from Union Station. 🚻 RESTROOMS: The museum is closed during evening hours, so portable restrooms are available on the North Lawn. 🐶 FAMILY & DOG FRIENDLY: Bring the kids, grandparents and even your leashed pups! ❤️ OUR EXPERIENCE: The projections are beautiful! We enjoyed the show so much that we stayed to watch it twice. It’s a unique way to experience one of Kansas City’s most iconic landmarks! ✨ SAVE THIS for your next Kansas City outing and SHARE #LibertysBeacon
