This commonly lasted for around a month, although forty days, or roughly six weeks, was also customary in some households. During this time, she might remain away from public worship while she rested and recovered. 🛏️🌿 When she was ready to return, she could take part in a ceremony known as the churching of women. ⛪✨ The roots of churching lay partly in the biblical purification laws described in Leviticus, but the Christian ceremony developed into something more complex. It became a rite of blessing and thanksgiving for a woman’s recovery and survival after childbirth. 🕊️🙏 During the ceremony, a priest offered prayers and formally welcomed the mother back into the church community. Although the custom retained associations with childbirth, blood and ritual purity, many women may also have experienced it as a joyful and deeply meaningful moment after one of the most dangerous ordeals of their lives. 🕯️🤍 Churching was practised throughout medieval and Tudor England and continued after the Reformation.
