Why this works ⬇️ Things like singing, dancing, roaring, stomping, and laughing help press the “brake pedal,” when our nervous system is ramping up. Using movement, sound, and breath, especially in a silly way, can move stress out of the body. 😮‍💨 And, as for our kids: Being in connection is regulating for the nervous system. Feeling safe, understood, and connected can activate the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system… …which is a sciency way of saying it can help “pump the brakes” when tension is rising. 😡 ➡️ ✋ ➡️ 🤪 ➡️ ☺️ So, next time you feel things escalating and are becoming frustrated, see if you can switch gears and try responding playfully… Is it possible (or appropriate) 100% of the time? NO, of course not! (We’re not ACTUAL robots) But when we can do this, we can effectively stop the cycle of dysregulation in a way that leads to laughter and connection for both parent and child. AND… …YOU may actually have fun! 😉 I had lots of fun making this with my friend Hayden, aka @lowtideplaytherapist on IG! He is a play therapist, parent coach, and father who loves helping families turn down the intensity and turn up the confidence! And if you don’t know me yet, hi I’m Mia, @playfulheartparenting is a mama and theatre educator who loves inspiring families to laugh together by helping parents access their creative, silly side. 👉 Follow along to see part two of our collaboration tomorrow! (And for lots more easy ways to incorporate playfulness into your parenting! 💞)
