Y’all, I was NOT prepared for the amount of SASS this little girl brought to this history lesson! 😂👏🏽 All I did was wish her a Happy Columbus Day, and apparently, that was my FIRST mistake! 🤣 But seriously, let's have a conversation about something I keep seeing in the comments. “Well, Columbus did some good things, too! Can't we celebrate both?” Absolutely, we can acknowledge the historical significance of Columbus's voyages. His expeditions helped establish lasting connections between Europe and the Americas, expanding transatlantic trade and accelerating the exchange of crops, animals, goods, and ideas. Nobody is denying that. But we're not going to conveniently skip over everything ELSE that came with it. We're talking about enslavement, forced labor, violence, displacement, European diseases, and the catastrophic destruction of Indigenous communities. And before somebody says, “Well, that's just what happened when civilizations conquered each other,” understand that explaining WHY something happened doesn't automatically justify WHAT happened. Historians estimate that tens of millions of Indigenous people inhabited the Americas before European colonization. Over the following century, their populations suffered a devastating collapse. Disease was a major factor, but so were violence, forced labor, starvation, and the destruction of communities. You cannot discuss the economic benefits of colonization while pretending the human cost was insignificant. And to the person who commented, “Columbus discovered a place that was new to Europe, so shouldn't we celebrate both equally?” WHAT?! 😂 If I sail across the ocean tomorrow, arrive in China, and announce that I've discovered China, does that suddenly make me its discoverer? NO! Because the people already living there might have something to say about that! Columbus's voyages were historically significant. But historical significance and heroism are two completely different things. We could have taught children that Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in 1492, reached the Caribbean, and helped initiate an era of sustained European colonization. That's HISTORY. We didn't have to teach generations of children that he discovered a land where millions of people already lived. And recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day isn't about pretending Indigenous civilizations were perfect. It's about recognizing the people, cultures, accomplishments, and histories that existed long before Columbus arrived. We can acknowledge what Columbus's voyages changed without celebrating everything they brought about. And personally, I don't believe the economic benefits outweigh the devastating human consequences. History doesn't need to be erased. It needs to be taught ACCURATELY. And apparently, my 10-year-old goddaughter came prepared to help with that! 😂🫶🏽 Welcome to Unwhitewashed American History with the Addison Family! 📚 #indigenouspeoplesday #columbusday #americanhistory #historytok #AddisonFamily
