Here in Ukraine, the gardening season is already drawing to a close, but I still need to manage to get the vegetable beds ready for winter. Why did you destroy the bell pepper bushes, they are a perennial plant? Winters in Ukraine are too cold; last winter, temperatures dropped below -30°C. Bell pepper plants will not survive such freezing temperatures. Why do you throw away pepper leaves when they are edible and can be used to make many delicious dishes? In Ukrainian cuisine, we don’t use bell pepper leaves—just as in other countries, people don’t eat certain things that are very popular here. However, compost made from bell pepper stems and leaves is highly nutritious for our vegetables! :) What do you mulch your vegetable beds with? I primarily use freshly mown lawn grass as mulch. If I mulch vegetable beds with freshly mown grass, will it take root and start growing? For seven years now, I’ve been mulching all our vegetable beds with freshly mown grass clippings, and not once has the grass taken root or started growing. You can see the results for yourself in this video. What kind of twine do you use for tying up your vegetable plants? For tying up vegetable plants, I use polyethylene garden twine; it’s inexpensive and quite strong, but it only lasts for one season. I’ve tried using natural garden twine, but it gets waterlogged in the rain and breaks—especially under the weight of tomato plants. What are the blue containers in the middle of your vegetable beds for? These are slug traps, my invention, I have been using them for three years now. As a filler for the traps, I use Ulicid - this is an organic molluscicide, a highly effective natural product in the form of bait granules for the control of slugs and snails. What is the white netting on the arches over your vegetable beds used for? This is my experimental trellis for tying up vegetable bushes. It proved effective, but not as convenient as I would have liked. Next season I will come up with other, more convenient trellis options. What material is this white mesh made of, and where can I buy it? This is a fiberglass reinforcing mesh, used in construction for concrete work. Here in Ukraine, this mesh is sold in large building supply stores. Try searching for it online. Where did you buy these vegetable garden beds?
