I'm tired of pretending top down thinking is a rational process at all. Call it what it is - an AVERSION to thinking

Yep. NT people think that adding more details = lying

I hate when NTs say "I don't want an excuse" like I'm not trying to give you an excuse I'm literally explaining what happened?? I explained it to my therapist once as "an excuse is an attempt to deflect responsibility. when I give an explanation I'm owning up to whatever I did and giving context as to why it happened and that it was not intentional"

it feels so fake that way. like putting on a play. I hate leaving out details because details could change the response.

My autistic friends meanwhile: I didn't text you back because I forgot you existed for a moment
me: yeah, I do that too.

I have ADHD and growing up i was always BEYOND confused when someone asked “why did you do that?” And i just answered their question. Because they asked me…then they said its excuses. WHAT ELSE DID YOU WANT ME TO SAY? YOU asked ME the question 💀💀💀💀

'i asked for an explanation, not an excuse!'...my entire existence in one angry sentence that's been on repeat my entire life...so I stopped saying anything other than 'im sorry' because I know that's all they want to hear...they don't want an explanation, they want to cause undue guilt🤷♀️

It sounds like an ‘excuse’ bc they’re looking for you to take accountability not provide an explanation. If you shift to accountability first as in: I was distracted. Then they are more amenable to further explanation.

I’ve never understood the “excuse” thing even when I was a kid. People would say “I don’t want any excuses” but an excuse is LITERALLY a reason/explanation….so what else could you possibly want??? You want me to be guilty of something that has a perfectly reasonable explanation?

It's also just a lot of work for the other person to process all that information. Chances are, I'm not too worried about the slow texting, but now I have to read about every detail of your day, and wondering "is this all just because you want to convince me you had no responsibility in this?", which is annoying. I process my details for you, I'd like you to do the same for me. "oh hey sorry for the slow response" is most likely all that's needed.

This is not quite right I feel. If you don’t text back and someone calls you out on it, the person is just not concerned about your perspective at that moment. If you explain, you are giving your perspective. But they want THEIR perspective to be heard and understood first. That’s not a problem of bottom up thinking, that is a problem of identifying when your perspective is appropriate to give (never when you upset someone, always listen/validate first).

I am autistic and I like short explanations cause lots of information makes me feel overwhelmed

They can’t process all those details then? They want me to oversimplify the entire process into a short answer so they do not have to build the mental model themselves. Is that so?

In other words, they expect us to do the emotional labor to protect them from having to process things?….interesting.

oh yeah, lets be real.. this is just going to be dismissed as deflection.. even though what your actually doing is being deeply vulnerable and honest..
this is simply because they are shallow.. and wouldnt even consider holding themselves that deeply accountable to you.

I’m autistic, and it is completely the opposite for me. People who do this overwhelm my system, I can't process too much information. I tend to ask, 'What’s the point?' because lengthy explanations shut down my language processing, and I lose track of the story.

The amount of times I’ve been told “I know that’s what you said but I didn’t think that’s what you meant.” I used all the exact right words, but it didn’t “feel” right. 😠

I really learned this at work anytime I made a mistake or over explained my sickness just made things worse - saying hey I’m not feeling well today I won’t be able to make it and radically reducing details and being vague has been extremely helpful and honestly I don’t even want them to know anyways

People at work have learned to be very, very careful when they ask me how I’m doing. Because I NEVER answer “Fine” or “Good, and you?” I tell them how I’m doing, literally and in detail. 😂

Neurotypicals struggle with clarity in their communications. They rely too much on assumptions of a shared exp or knowledge.
