@theunkowndeity: $360k for not changing your words. Too much or not enough? Jessica Tapia had worked for Jurupa Unified School District for nearly a decade when her employer handed her a choice: set aside her faith, or lose her job. The district had already issued her a formal Notice of Unprofessional Conduct, citing social media posts and her refusal to use students' preferred pronouns. Months later, she was fired. She filed suit, alleging wrongful termination and violations of her First Amendment rights. The district denied any wrongdoing, calling what followed a "compromise of a disputed claim, in the best interest of the students." That compromise cost them $360,000. Of that, $285,000 went directly to Tapia. The district, which had set a policy allowing a student's gender identity to be withheld from parents without their knowledge, returned to business as usual. No admission. No accountability. Just a number on a settlement agreement and a clause barring Tapia from ever working there again. The record is here. Whether enough people stop looking away from it is the part that still isn't settled. #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #wrongfultermination
