My cousins are like that too, but I think a lot of it comes down to family history and deep-rooted inferiority complexes. My dada Abu and nana Abu served as a Subedars in the army, and I feel like that created a lot of jealousy and insecurity within the extended family.
Some of my chachus and phupos and mamons grew up in the village, and there was a time in their younger years when they would go to sleep hungry. That kind of background can create a complicated mindset, especially when people eventually become financially successful. In my experience, some people become obsessed with status and material possessions, and when they get involved in politics, corruption can become a way to climb the social ladder and buy houses they otherwise couldn’t afford.
My dad’s side has connections with PPP, while my mom’s side has connections with PML-N. One of my mamus even married a cousin of Nawaz Sharif. Then, when Imran Khan came to power, some of these same cousins suddenly became massive PTI supporters. Yet, despite publicly supporting PTI, their old loyalties to PPP and PML-N never really seemed to disappear. It was almost as if they were still patwaris or jiyalas behind the scenes.
That’s why I think the mindset is so complicated. When someone makes a big deal out of buying you a KFC meal, as if they’ve done you an enormous favour, it says a lot about their attitude towards money, status, and relationships. Sometimes, it’s not really about the meal; it’s about the power dynamic and the need to make other people feel indebted to them.
