@var.aunevik: Whenever I am asked what the meaning of life is I like to say it's contrast. Life might be easier when you have less to compare it to, but without contrast, you can't really see anything at all. I grew up on Svalbard, with polar bears. With dark season and midnight sun. And I never thought of it as strange, or difficult. It was just my life. Until I moved away and experienced my first fall, when everything turned orange, and I thought: wow, where have I been all my life? And now, when I go back to visit during dark season, it’s a lot harder than it was when I was younger. The darkness is darker, in a way. But it also made everything else brighter. Quotes taken from Viktor Shklovsky - art as technique (google it and you will find a free pdf:)

and when I get the choice today I would still choose to take the pain coming with discovering new things rather than the happy cave

thats why social media is a thief of contentment..we can see everything else everyone has and is doing, even though its just the best parts of their lives that they choose to present. we were never ment to compare our lives to others like this

I really appreciate the autumn this year after the crazy hot summer. And I feel hugged by the early darkness. After a summer vacation in Norway (mostly ☔️) I was starving for the sun. Very basic example.. i wonder if you will miss the snow at some point.

Besides being so gorgeous, of course comparing makes thing less wanted; and habit wears off our receptors and later the effect of using things, including people

As someone who escaped war and went to another country, the idea of returning seems so difficult it’s like my mind thinks if I went there now i’m not gonna be able to live for even a minute.

It's not the darkness itself, it's the cultural rethoric you now understand the darkness through. It's never the thing itself. It never is. It's that you contacted a new story about the darkness that you didn't have before. It could have been a story of wonder and mystery and adventure and resilience, but somehow you adopted the outsider's tale of darkness. It was the belonging chip most probably. The social animal. But we do have examples of one thing being experienced as great or as doom by different people, and it's not in the thing, it's always in the people. You were told your story by outsiders and somehow you find that version of your life and your place more compelling than 'your own'. That's why Taylor Swift is more popular in places that don't even share the culture or the language than local music. It's cultural colonialism. Don't let other people interpret your life for you.
