Pakistan’s $7 trillion mineral wealth has attracted growing U.S. interest, with American officials discussing opportunities in critical minerals, including copper, gold and rare-earth elements. But there’s a bigger question: the United States has its own rare-earth deposits, yet mining and processing can involve environmental challenges, including radioactive waste from certain ores. If such risks emerge in Pakistan’s underdeveloped regions, who will protect the communities living there? Pakistan’s external debt and liabilities stand at around $138.85 billion—making the estimated $7 trillion mineral wealth roughly 50 times that amount. However, this is an estimate of resources, not guaranteed revenue. Foreign investment could bring jobs, technology and economic growth. But without transparent contracts, strong environmental safeguards and local processing, will Pakistan capture the real value—or mainly export raw materials while others earn the bigger profits? The real question isn’t just how much wealth lies underground. It’s how much of that wealth will actually benefit Pakistan and its people.
