In Japan, many believe neat writing produces better grades. In 2008, a journalist went through more than 200 notebooks from students who passed the entrance exam for the University of Tokyo, the country's most prestigious university, and found the notes were clean and written at the same even pitch from the first page to the last. It confirmed a long-held belief, going back to the Han-dynasty scholar Yang Xiong, who wrote that your handwriting shows who you are. But writing Japanese well isn't only about being neat, it's about balance, which is why Japanese kids start with boxes marked with a faint center cross instead of ruled lines, since a difference in a single stroke can make a completely different character. Boxes also help because Japanese is often written vertically, and school requires both directions. Stationery companies offered ruled pages in different widths, A-ruled at 7mm and B-ruled at 6mm, and after that 2008 observation, Kokuyo added small dots along each line to help align text, diagrams, and vertical columns. When surveyed, two-thirds of students said their page style changes by subject, since a kanji with many strokes can look like a smudge in a narrow layout.
