For IDK u could also say “I need more information before making a decision” if it’s now like a how to kind of question

VP here. I prefer honesty. If you don’t know, say it. We’ll work together to find the resources that do know so we will know next time.

Instead of “IDK” I usually say, “I’d love to validate that for you in a follow up before I give any misinformation”.

I wish we had TikToks like this 10 years ago. As a Russian/asian immigrant woman with Audhd I couldn’t understand why no one was being honest and I was struggling so much in corporate. Took me years of trial and error and intense observations to understand that in American corporate culture has its own language. I would’ve been promoted so much faster if I cracked the code earlier

So I would tell my supervisor that’s not my job and I got a promotion because my supervisor loves my honesty, he then asked me a structured question and I told him these are the proper steps and guidance to find someone who could fulfill that position (after doing research of my own). I think the culture of corporate should get out of that mindset; trying to pile so much work on people that doesn’t belong to them and try to have them figure it out, that is not the way to do it.

I have no issues saying I don’t know to something. I will give my best answer, if I have one - but I will be straight up and say “I think I ___ but I am not positive” then I will either advise who would have an answer or I will offer to find an answer, depending on situation. I appreciate when people are candid with me in a similar fashion, personally. But I also know this may not be the best approach for others.

one thing I tell my reports is that it is 100% better to say you don't have an answer than to try to make one up on the fly. you could end up eating your words, or someone in the room *will* know the answer and will call you out. regardless, telling the room that you'll do your due diligence to find the right answer goes so much further to protect your credibility and reaffirm your expertise than trying to look like you have all the answers.
