@joasia.sochacka: 50 Greatest Conductors of All Time: 4️⃣6️⃣ Yuri Temirkanov 🇷🇺 Some conductors look like they’re fighting the entire ballet on the podium! 🔥🎼 Yuri Temirkanov was renowned for his expressive gestures, intense musical personality, and extraordinary partnership with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. 🎼 In this legendary footage, Temirkanov conducts the dramatic “Death of Tybalt” from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Recorded at the BBC Proms in 1992, the performance begins at breakneck speed — and the conductor himself becomes part of the drama! The orchestra delivers a thrilling, high-voltage performance, while Temirkanov’s gestures make it almost impossible to look away. This is Prokofiev at his most explosive! Is he maybe fighting Tybalt himself? • 50 conductors. 50 legends. See who’s next! I saw him conduct this piece with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of music when I was in my 20s. It was one of the most incredible concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra I had ever attended. At the conclusion the entire house went wild.

Learning to do less is so hard, but it’s the key to effective conducting.

I wonder where James Horner got the idea for the opening bars of ‘Stealing the Enterprise’ from ST3?

Interesting to see how much of the time his eyes are in the score and how little he looks up to make eye contact with his performers.

His career gained momentum in 1966, when he won the All-Union Conductors’ Competition in Moscow. The following year, he made his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, beginning a close relationship with the legendary orchestra and its principal conductor, Yevgeny Mravinsky. Temirkanov went on to lead several major ensembles. He was principal conductor of the Kirov Theatre, now the Mariinsky Theatre, from 1976 to 1988, before becoming artistic director and principal conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic in 1988. He held the principal conducting position until 2022, building a partnership that lasted more than three decades. He also served as principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2006.

One of the most distinctive features of his conducting was that he never used a baton. Instead, he shaped the music with his hands, facial expressions, and subtle physical gestures. He believed that conducting was not simply about giving orders, but about creating the right atmosphere for musicians to express themselves freely.
