@josephanthony5037: In my own opinion and experience, from a Long Island standard, with the cost of living rising, expensive to live and eat here, people working lots of OT or side jobs. Their isn’t much time to volunteer as there was 10-20 years ago plus. I believe in the next 10-20 years volunteer departments will at least have a paid engine during day time hours of the day and still keep a hybrid paid/volunteer service. #fyp #trending #firedepartment #firefighter
Paid is coming our way, the old man is knocking, don’t let him in

Should be all paid… the amount of equipment for every dept is redundant and the fd tax is astronomical as it is.. no reason have full blown heavy rescues and ladders galore in every dept when they’re stacked on top of each other

yes im in Nassau some of the richer areas will become paid faster. the issue is when they become unionized the firefighter are going to want to paid like the police and taxes are going to go through the roof

Does it not get funding from tax dollars and donations? The amount of taxes paid here on Long Island, especially village taxes some which goes towards keeping the firehouses open and running.

As a volunteer I absolutely love volunteering. As a taxpayer I think a volunteer service is abhorrent.

I hope so - I used to be a LI volunteer and think that paid staffing would solve a TON of the issues we had

I think I’m seeing more combo departments but then I see the volunteers leaving those same combo departments. I think at the end of day you gotta wanna do it paid or not paid. I signed up to be apart of something bigger I don’t really care if I’m paid for my time or not. I think more areas need more manpower which paid staffing helps provide but volley service is dying.

In my opinion the island will never go full paid. People just can’t afford nor don’t want to pay the additional taxes. I can see a lot of departments especially in Nassau having a paid crew for one engine during the day Monday through Friday but I just don’t see full paid. Also I can see a lot more paid full time EMS becoming a thing

Yes and No. It's a tax base thing as well as a distance issue. Also each state is different. Some can't bear to play in the sandbox while others can do the combo dept. A paid department has to be able to be backed by the municipality and the area it serves. It's too much to write here but there's arguments all around for it

But at what point will the current volunteers speak up and say it’s time to change to a combination department. Politicians turn a blind eye towards it because here on Long Island we are a large voting block. It’s up to us to put the public before our pride and say to the politicians it’s time for change

The economy has changed so much that volunteers can’t afford to leave work for calls and employers don’t have to be flexible. Nobody should have to wait for someone to leave work, drive to the station, grab apparatus, wait for some other folks and then head to your emergency

As someone who has been to Joey D 8 years running and not from NY I think the priorities are a little messed up on LI. It seems everyone has a brand new heavy rescue and it’s hard to find an engine over 5 years old. Coram’s station alone is easily the nicest and most expensive station I’ve ever seen. All this money in equipment, stations and god knows how many sets of turnout gear is so wasteful. Having a duty shift model or hybrid paid/volunteer is the way forward. But my god everything on Long Island is brand new and the staffing is ignored.

no. People would never want to pay additional taxes. I'd happily pay more into taxes to support the volunteers who give back to their communities.

absolutely, How can anyone afford to live and volunteer now. So many people have multiple jobs. How do they even staff the schedules.

They will become a county based service like the western states. Instead of municipalities running 4 engines and 2 trucks volunteer, they might run a 2 and 1 system. For 2 towns. Obviously other factors will included, but eventually it might. Unless they go full A.I. firefighters by 2036.
