@chatham.house: The British Museum is the largest depository of stolen goods known to man.' said Lord Boateng about the museum's record on returning cultural artefacts to their countries of origin. Speaking at Chatham House on 15 October, Lord Boateng argued that the British Museum has talked about reparative justice but has not delivered on it, and that its friends should press the trustees to do more, including the full return of the Ethiopian Tabots, Benin Bronzes and Ashanti gold. #ReparativeJustice #BritishMuseum #Restitution #Reparations #BeninBronzes
As with returning artefacts, it depends on the nation and must be done carefully. These artefacts are cared for, and remain out of private hands. How long do they return to their origin do they slip away into the night? Some may say it does not concern anyone as to what happens when the artefacts are repatriated, yet ask any archaeologist and I am certain the opinion will be far more nuanced. Human history sees no nation. All over the world artefacts are privately profiteered, or even destroyed. You only need to see some of the smouldering ruins in Afghanistan, or Iraq, or the destroyed Buddhas of Bamiyan. Human history, lost forever. They remain one of the largest conserves of human history in the world, and continually develop new ways to keep that human history alive. If I could I would place the museum on some neutral ground, but that does not exist. There is no place on the planet in which can claim such. You do not pay such care to the storage of bones of a charnel house, something of which those who work for and in lieu with the museum cannot be accused of. Ideology is not always practicality and idealism is not true care. Despite troubles, as any institution has, there is currently no other with a record to contest it and that to this day does not charge any who visit.

It was once said if the British Museum return every piece of artefacts to their rightful owners, nothing would be left in that museum
