The last 12 days have been heavy. I don’t think I’ve ever felt loneliness quite like I have this past almost two weeks. We went from having Bill home almost every night to seeing him for only a few hours here and there. The girls miss their dad. I miss my husband. And through all of it, I praise God that he and the crew are safe and that the cows are safe. That is what matters most. A lot of our feed may be gone, and a lot of it is still burning. There’s a lot we still don’t know and a lot that will have to be figured out when this is finally over. But grass can grow again. Feed can be replaced. Things can be rebuilt. I just want everyone to come home safe. Because nothing prepares you for getting a text saying the fire is headed toward your husband and that he may have to hold up with the cows he has until it passes over him. And nothing prepares you for what comes after that text. When there’s no service in the hills and hours go by without hearing whether they’re okay. When all you can do is wait, pray, and stare at your phone hoping for a message to finally come through. Meanwhile, life at home keeps going. There are still 4 little kids who need Mom, who already miss their dad and don’t need to know just how scared Mom is too. So you keep things as normal as you can. You try not to show them how worried you are or how lonely the house feels without him in it. These 12 days have made me realize just how much I took the ordinary for granted. Having my husband walk through the door every night. Hearing the girls yell “Dad!” when he gets home. Sitting down together. Knowing where he is. Knowing he’s safe. For now, I’m praying for rain. Praying for everyone still out there fighting. Praying for the ranchers trying to protect their cattle and livelihoods. Praying for the firefighters. And thanking God every single time my phone finally lights up with Bill checking in. Everything else can be figured out later. I’m just ready to have my husband home. #BigGrassFire
