@antonia_investing: £670 billion sounds like enough to fix Britain. Here's how long it would actually last. We worked through what taxing the UK's billionaires could realistically raise, and how that compares with what ordinary taxpayers already fund. Figures are illustrative, assuming England and Wales rates, a £60,000 salary, the standard personal allowance and no student loan. This is educational content, not financial or tax advice. Have you ever looked at your HMRC annual tax summary? 👇 Sources: Sunday Times Rich List 2026; OBR public spending and debt interest forecasts; HMRC income tax and NI rates 2026/27; Wealth Tax Commission / Tax Justice UK wealth tax estimates; HMRC annual tax summary guidance

Totally agree with everything you’ve just said and get so frustrated with the ‘tax billionaires’ brigade who know nothing about tax or the economy

Labour tied their hands to get into power. Nearly everyone I have spoken to and I think it resonates more widely - a small increase on Income Tax would have covered off most of the pseudo taxes they have implemented since coming into power. Tinkering will lead to ruin, divisiveness and intolerance

The top 1% generate 28% of income tax and the top 10% generate 60% of income tax (government figures). Most billionaires have companies and businesses generating supply chains, jobs, income tax, NI, business rates, VAT, corporation tax, pension contributions etc. They generally (not exclusively though!) do not sit on their wealth in an unproductive way. Yes, they make a lot of money for themselves but if they moved away from the UK there would be a big hole to fill. I’m not one of the 1 or 10% by the way but I am interested in economics and I would not like to have my taxes raised to fill that hole. There is room to increase upper level earnings taxation and there is agreement amongst some of the ‘super rich’ that this should be done, but not to the point where taking the risk of starting a business and becoming successful is not worth doing.

Who claimed that a wealth tax would solve all our problems? Nobody! The whole point is for it to help, just like you've claimed it will. How about they all start paying at least the same % of tax on their income as the rest of us, because let's face it, ordinary workers can end up paying a higher effective rate of tax than wealthy people who can take advantage of lower taxes on dividends and capital gains.

I’d rather just a flat tax rate on any earnings, thing is if you make something complicated and make people feel like if I jump from 100k to 110k I’ll pay far more tax and it’s not worth it, it should be a flat tax rate on any earnings over 15k. Just make it simple and people won’t look for ways to avoid it

A great exercise in “how can I completely misrepresent what a wealth tax would be.”

I think people want to equity in sharing tax overhead. And it is much easier to avoid paying that when you have a lot of money

The ‘rich’ can leave and will leave if they want, when they want, … the bigger issue is that the next generation of entrepreneurs that are working hard to grow and scale their business are being smashed from every angle .. so the gap is widening and growth is severely stunted, growing a business in this climate is almost impossible in so many industries, its just depressing .. coupled with a system that isn’t fit for purpose .. the HMRC, they punish business owners while simultaneously haemorrhaging money by the millions …so taking more money (even from the ‘rich’) when the system is broken won’t fix anything in the long term. The majority of business owners in the UK are not in the ‘rich’ bracket… if the pressure is relentless..eventually people will take their skills and experience somewhere else where they can keep most of their money, who wouldn’t ?! … so you isolate the working man not just the ‘rich’ ..I do think however big Corporations that get away with what they do is unacceptable especially in this climate .. both in tax and profits!! this Gov continues to push working people under water even more.. the 28th is going to be interesting … we are all barely managing as it is .. the notion of taxing the ‘rich’ is an easy option for people to cling onto especially those that are on benefits and/or poor .. but also .. who defines who is ‘rich’ it’s an easy concept to throw out but actually without the ‘rich’ the country suffers even more it’s a catch 22 unfortunately created by this and previous governments- they have totally F it up !

I would add a land value tax. This would provide more fairness in addition to a small wealth tax. While at the same time offer income tax reductions to businesses.

Maybe scrapping council tax and base it on the income of household. HMRC know these figures.. plus, house values have gone up higher than salaries and are therefore disproportionate to the value of what someone /a household can pay.. 🤔🤷‍♂️

It’s not just about government income. It’s about wealth inequality. Asset prices constantly increasing. Government debt increasing, council debt increasing and general public debt increasing. This has to stop. Governments spending more than ever but we the general public are receiving a worse service year in and year out. Since 2008 we’ve had little or no growth for nearly 20 years but the wealthiest have tripled their wealth. Explain to me how. How I see is the wealthiest are extracting wealth from society whether it’s government, councils or the public. We are becoming poorer while the wealthiest become richer. Thatcherism and neoliberalism has failed.

Taxing wealth, is a stepping stone to helping. Where else could the state get that sort of additional income. Reducing the overheads and associated inefficiencies is also essential. pensions are a difficult one because they were promised and are keeping people off the street and mostly healthy. the state needs to look at the big picture and balance the books, close tax loopholes, invest where possible and gradually transition the population out of state dependency otherwise we will be bankrupt before too long.
