@taw_africanart: Pastel Guru Korbet | Self-Taught Mixed-Media Artist As a member of the City of Bowie Maryland arts Committee, attended the Old Bowie Arts on the Ave, which is a community centered event celebrating local creativity, arts, culture, and connection in the heart of Old Bowie. This day, I had the pleasure of meeting the Pastel Guru Korbet. Pastel Guru is a self-taught mixed-media artist whose work reflects an intuitive and highly personal approach to creativity. Rather than being confined to a single medium or traditional artistic process, she explores the possibilities created by bringing different materials, textures, colors, and techniques together within the same composition. Her work demonstrates how being self-taught can become an artistic strength, allowing creativity, experimentation, and personal expression to guide the process rather than a prescribed set of rules. The result is artwork with a distinctive visual character, where color, texture, layering, and imagination work together to create pieces that invite the viewer to look beyond the surface. What I particularly appreciate about Pastel Guru's journey is that it represents the accessibility of artistic expression. Her work reminds us that becoming an artist does not necessarily begin with formal training; it can begin with curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and the confidence to develop one's own creative voice.
