@thenyctransitguy: Title: Montrose Avenue (L) Subway Station: Former Temporary Connection to the Bushwick Yard Information: What most riders don’t realize is that subway cars once entered this line directly from the street. When the original section of the BMT 14th Street–Eastern District Line opened between Sixth Avenue in Manhattan and Montrose Avenue in Brooklyn back in 1924, it was completely isolated from the rest of the BMT system. A temporary track connection was established from the Long Island Rail Road’s Bushwick Yard. At the northern end of the station, an opening above the Manhattan-bound track accommodated a temporary delivery ramp. A motor truck hauled each subway car to the top of the incline, where workers used cables and pulleys to carefully lower it into the subway. This connection was used strictly for equipment deliveries, not passenger service. The first subway cars arrived in June 1924, followed by six additional cars in July 1927. This unusual operation continued for several years until 1928, when the line was extended eastward and connected to the existing Canarsie route, finally ending the original section’s isolation. Once this connection was established, new subway cars could be delivered directly to the Canarsie Line through the East New York Yard, eliminating the need for the temporary street-level tracks and ramp. Although the temporary tracks and open portal are long gone, evidence of this unusual arrangement can still be found today. If you look carefully at the station ceiling, you may notice some peculiar structural features that serve as reminders of the former ramp that once descended into the subway tunnel. Back in the 70s, my aunt owned that restaurant next to the stop, and my cousin ran an illegal club in the back of the restaurant. 😎
